Before completing a final examination set by the College of Opticians, a student must:
- complete his/her college training
- passed examinations set by the colleges
- complete required (minimum) 2000 hours field training under the supervisoin of an registered Optician
Only when the final examinations have been successfully completed will a license to practice be granted.
The written examinations cover a wide range of topics relating to various aspects of eye glasses dispensing, contact lens fitting, mathematics and physics, lense design, applied optics, as well as anatomy, physiology, pathology and pharmacology as they apply to the human eye.
Practical and oral examinations are given in the use of wide variety of modern optical instruments, preparation, construction, fitting and follow up of contact lenses and eye glasses; interpretation of prescription issued by Optometrists and Ophthalmologists and pathology related to the human eye.
Many Optometrists and Ophthalmologists include opticians in their practice to enhance and complete patient eyecare.
