OHIP COVERAGE FOR EYE EXAMINATIONS
- children, teens to 18 and seniors 65 and over are covered every year
- patients with medical conditions, eg. diabetes or glaucoma, are covered every year
- patients on Disability Assistance and Ontario Works are covered every two years
WHAT TO PREPARE FOR YOUR EYE EXAMINATION
- bring you current eyeglasses and contact lenses
- bring a list of any medications you are currently taking
- bring a list of any questions or concerns you may have about your vision
- bring sunglasses to reduce light sensitivity from dilation drops
- yoi may prefer a driver after having dilation drops
WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT DURING YOUR EYE EXAMINATION
Getting Started
The doctor will review your personal and family health history and what current medications you are taking, as these aspects can affect your vision. They will also ask questions concerning your current vision, any vision concerns or problems you are experiencing and also any distinctive visual demands fro your occupation and hobbies.
Refraction
The doctor uses a hand-held instrument (retinascope) to assess the health of your retina and to detect and measure visual conditions, such as nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism. A retinoscope (non-invasive) shines a light to the back wall of the eye (retina).
You will then look at a distant lettered eye cart “the Big E” through an instrument called a phoropter. The doctor switches multiple lenses in front of your eyes to fine tune the images on the chart and determines a final correction for your prescription. The eye chart shows specific sized letter or pictures for children.
Binocular Vision
The doctor evaluates how well your eyes work together equally and simultaneously as a team. Tests are conducted for following an object, depth perception and eye-hand coordination to determine how well your eyes align or coordinate.
Peripheral Vision
The doctor uses three different tests, including a field vision test, to measure how well you see objects out of your direct line of sight. These tests can help to detect such conditions as glaucoma, diseases or the retina and even some neurological problems.
Pupil Response to Light
By shining a light in your eyes and watching the pupil’s reaction, the doctor can detect possible neurological problems
Colour Vision Test
You will be asked to describe figures in a series of illustrations made up of numerous coloured dots or circles. This tests your ability to differentiate colours
Ocular Health
The external structures of the eye will be examined by a slit lamp, and an ophthalmoscope is used to see the retina and optic nerve at the back of the eye. Diseases specific to the eye and even the entire body can be discovered through these tests
Retinal Scanning
The Optomap retinal scanning system givds the doctor an ultra wide viewing field of the retina and digitally records the results. The scanning procedure is very fast and painless. Optomap scans blood vessels in the retina to assess eye and overall health, as well as providing early detections and monitoring for diabetes, hypertension, glaucoma, macular degernertion, and cancers. As many vision problems begin at an early age and go undetected, it is an excellent system for young patients.
Dilation Drops
Dialation drops relax the pupil so when the doctor shines a light in your eye the optic nerve and retina can be completely examined. Drops generally affect close vision for two to three hours, though reactions vary from person to person. You may have trouble reading and experience sensitivity to light, so wearing sunglasses after your appointment will help minimize the light sensitivity.
